Long considered the “Moonshine Capital Of The World” the Great Smoky Mountains are steeped in corn liquor. For decades moonshine has been a guilty and illegal pleasure. “Revenuers” scoured the Smoky Mountain hollers tracking down illegal stills giving rise to a black market which was prevalent until this decade. Families and communities once relied on the money producing moonshine could provide. The dangerous task of bootlegging the moonshine to market is the true backstory of the famous drive Thunder Road. These intrepid hot-rodders were the forerunners of today’s billion dollar sport NASCAR.
Ironically, today moonshine is legal to produce and consume, and the industry is booming. Pull a stool up to the bar and prepare to sample some might fine ‘shine. Most distilleries offer a variety of flavored moonshine at daily tastings. Try the sour apple, pina colada, maybe some ‘shine soaked cherries, or have it straight up old-school. There are many more flavors to sample, so discover them all for yourself. Be sure and have a designated driver handy and enjoy in moderation.
