Smoky Mountain Rafting

Smoky Mountain rafting is the adventure of a lifetime! Whitewater rafting in the Great Smoky Mountains has become one of the most popular activities and is an all-time favorite adventure for HeySmokies! There are many rivers and adventures for all skill levels.

The Big Pigeon River, with Class I-IV rapids, actually shares the eastern border with Great Smoky Mountains National Park. There are  over 10 miles of whitewater fun with fourteen outfitters ready to help plan your adventure. Other rivers include the French Broad with Class I-IV rapids, the Ocoee River to the west of the Smokies which hosted the 1996 Olympic WhiteWater Competition boasts class I-V rapids, and the Nantahala River and the Tuckaseegee River to the south of the Smokies are family friendly with easy Class I-III rapids. Little River in Townsend and the Oconaluftee River offer great tubing fun as well.

Some rivers like the Big Pigeon have separate upper and lower runs for more or less whitewater depending on your age and experience level. Make no mistake, taking it slow on the river can sometimes be more rewarding than a whitewater trip because you have time to look around and enjoy the mountain scenery. And you never know what critters may find along river bank so keep your eyes peeled for bald eagles, otters and maybe even a bear! Most of the time though, you just sharing the moment with the great people with you.

Be sure and share your river adventure pics with us on HeySmokies’ Facebook page!
